Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays Aug 1, from Venice to Vegas, Venice BBQ Aug 2

The First Fridays of the month is coming atcha quickly – this Friday, August 1, 2014, followed by the Venice Community Barbecue on Saturday, August 2.

The AKFF Blog is in Las Vegas with a special report on sizzling summer fun - nightclubs, pools and shopping!

We'll be back in time for First Fridays on Abbot Kinney!

First Friday – Abbot Kinney Blvd – Friday, Aug 1, Starts around 6pm
Get some eats, see our Tweets for which food trucks will be there!
Then head on over to Electric Lodge, just around the corner from Abbot Kinney – walk to Milwood and turn left (easiest way to get there) or California (at the light) turn right and walk a short distance. You're in for a real treat! Hang out, get a drink at the bar, then catch a free performance at 9pm, followed by dj sets. More details coming later. Electric Lodge, 1416 Electric Av. Valet parking available.

Venice to Vegas – Special Report on where to eat, shop and play (clubs & pools)
It's sizzling hot and what better way to cool off than one of the many pools or shop it off – and there is great shopping in Las Vegas!
Shop at All Saints in the contemporary Cosmopolitan, part of the City Center! Eat at Wicked Spoon in the Cosmopolitan, if you're looking for a buffet- it has the reputation as one of the best!

Play at Drai's, the hottest new club on the Strip! Saturday night is the night to go to this beautiful, classy club with  a pool that has an amazing view of the Strip! The beats are great, the vibe is fun and you can dance your ass off! It's a good classy crowd, (much classier than other clubs in LV) short line, no searches (they do that at Tao- so annoying), while it's crowded, you're not packed in like a sardine, so you can dance the night away! Drinks are $$$ (like most places on the Strip). The bars at Vegas clubs need to take note of places like Hal's Bar & Grill on Abbot Kinney to learn how to make a superb drink  – and great customer service! Nuff said...

Speaking of cocktails, it was nice to  have a cosmopolitan during happy hour at Kona's, away from the Strip, 20 minutes away in Summerlin, for a chill experience with some good eats like avocado egg rolls and margherita pizza and sushi. Plus shopping there in the Boca Center -  Las Vegas Facebook photos coming soon! Pools, pools, so many pools - we loved the Bellagio for a classy experience that makes you feel like royalty (5 pools and jacuzzis), Aria is nice with 2 pools including a 21+ pool and upbeat  weekend scene at Encore. Come back - more coming soon!

Venice Community Barbeque – Saturday, Aug 2, 12-4pm
This annual event is a fun one for all ages. The local Fire Station 63  makes the BEST BBQ ever! Just bring a side dish or dessert to share for at least 10 people. Local music, games for the kids and more! Oakwood Recreation Center.

5 Healthy Living Tips from Turning Point Pilates in Venice

Robin Solo from Turning Point Pilates in Venice shares 5 Healthy Lifestyle Tips  with Abbot Kinney First Fridays that will help you look good and feel good at any time of the year! (Of course, it is summer and  we all want to look really good!)

1- Eat breakfast or something in the AM!. This  gives you energy to start your day, improves concentration and productivity.

2- Doing something active is doing something positive for yourself. Make the time!, Try walking, try Pilates, a Krav Maga class, yoga. Movement is key to health!

3- A flatter tummy can be yours. Do Pilates 3x a week for a month! The practice requires constant abdominal engagement with attention to drawing them in and up,  Your abs hold your organs in and support your back too!

4- Start exercising at any age. Get up your gumption and start! Exercise is proven to increase mental function, memory, endurance, balance, strength and will elevate your mood. There are so many choices, experiment, you may try something you love!

5- HYDRATE! Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to function correctly. Fluids remove waste, control body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and aid metabolism Poor hydration weakens the body's immune system leading to illness  and premature aging!

Abbot Kinney Rumor Mill!

What Does Kolu LA, Ann Taylor, The Pharmacy, Spotted Pig and Local 1205 have in Common?

Abbot Kinney Boulevard of course! There's been a steady bunch of retail and restaurant business closings  that turns over about every 3-4 months on THE boulevard, dubbed as “the most happening shopping destination in America” by GQ Magazine.

Easy come, easy go. We just saw Kolu LA, the women's boutique closest to the intersection of Venice Blvd close its door at the end of June. Sorry to see it go as it  presented beautiful clothing and accessories plus sported a great sales rack in the back room. (Too bad they didn't advertise on the Abbot Kinney First Fridays Blog!)

Local 1205 also closed it's doors (no advertising... plus  beaucoup menu changes...) being replaced by the Spotted Pig. Hmmm, sounds interesting.

The Pharmacy marijuana dispensary closed a few months ago and may be  replaced by Ann Taylor, we were told by a reliable source. Who woulda thought... on Abbot Kinney? What's the world coming to? In spite of that, there are still flocks of peeps checkin' out the boulevard, especially on the weekends.

Gotta tip on a new spot on Abbot Kinney Boulevard?  Want to share photos of some new shops on THE Boulevard? All you need to to do is email our Editor or post your photo on the AKFF Facebook page. If you  want to blog for us you know what to do: Email the Editor ASAP!

PS- Trader Joe's to open on Lincoln Blvd- woohoo!

July 4 Fireworks in Marina del Rey – NO First Friday

Since you all have been asking - there is NO FIRST FRIDAYS ON ABBOT KINNEY IN JULY on our National Holiday, July 4th 2014.  Have fun on the holiday (see below) and make sure to come to 1st Fridays on August 1, 2014!  The AKFF Team is planning something special just for you! Hint: Fashion, Food, Music, DJ's! JUST ADDED VENICE DUCK BREWERY - HOTEL ERWIN BBQ ON JULY 4TH!

The Marina del Rey Fireworks are always a favorite Fourth of July event! Fireworks can be seen at 9pm for 20 minutes from the beach and at various restaurant and hotel locations in the area. A fave viewing spot for the AKFF Team has been on the beach near the Venice Pier, closest to Washington Bl. There are a slew of restaurants on Washington to get eats and drinks before the fireworks.

Keep in mind both traffic and parking will be crazy- really! If you can walk, bike, skateboard or take a bus to your fireworks viewing spot, it will be a much better experience for you.  The traffic on Lincoln is the worst before and after the fireworks and best to avoid it, plussome street closures in the Marina.

You can see fireworks in the Marina if you're hooked up with a boat or book one of the boat cruises. You can also take the bike path close to the UCLA Aquatic Center which is about as close to the fireworks as you can get and is really spectacular. Also check out Burton Chace Park and Fisherman's Village in the Marina which will get packed quickly. More info >

You will want to check out this event at Hotel Erwin in Venice, right by the beach!

On July 4th from 1-6pm the valet area will be transformed into a patio where you can enjoy brews from Venice Duck Brewery, hotdogs and music by Venice musician, Chris Hawley!

It's sure to be a good time so stop on by!
The deets: $20.00 gets you one hot dog or hot link and two beers.
(The downstairs party does not grant you access to the rooftop.)

Venice Artist Karen Goulekas

Local Venice Artist Karen Goulekas has been a Photo Artist for years but her day job as a Visual Effects Supervisor kept getting in the way.
With a lot of big studio films now being made outside of California it gave her the free time to pursue photography. Her first two photo series came about while on location for Looper, an indie film starring Bruce Willis. The first series "Abandoned", features photos taken in post-Katrina New Orleans at an old Sugar Mill and a vacated Six Flags theme park. "It was the creepiest place I've ever been. Everybody had guns" she said while relating an unsettling encounter with four armed men in a pickup truck who were alligator hunting amongst the old deserted rides.  Read More >
