Venice Profile: Who Is Gerry Fialka?

“Uh oh, I’ll never reveal that. I don’t even know”, he joked...
“Lo-fi hi-jinks.” "You can’t live in Venice and hate Jim Morrison but I hate Jim Morrison. “I host a reading club but I’m not a good reader, I’m bi-polar and ADD.

He’s been a mainstay of the Venice scene for over 30 years. He’s a filmmaker, a voracious event organizer who regularly hosts five multimedia events each month along with numerous special events he creates with filmmakers, authors, musicians and artists of all stripes. He has worked for the late Frank Zappa and is a musician in his own right playing guitar with the avant garde group Black Shoe Polish. He is a friend to the homeless and has more sides than a kaleidoscope. Throughout his various interests and passions runs the theme of community. Fialka is also half of a Venice ‘IT’ couple completed by his wife, singer/siren Suzy Williams. AKFF recently sat down with the perpetually busy Fialka for a face to face.

You’re originally from Flint, MI. How did you find yourself in Venice, CA?

“I’d studied modern art and film studies at the University of Michigan. I was on the screening committee of the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Two friends moved to Venice and told me it was a cool place. So I moved to LA because I had experience in film distribution and knew film festival aesthetics and thought I could work in that world. I’ve been here in the same place for 33 years. I think Venice is the best place to live in the world. I never thought of ever moving out. I love it.”

There’s been a lot of changes to Venice, most recently on Abbot Kinney Blvd.
“They’ve been trying to gentrify Venice for 30, 40, 50 years but there’s still no McDonalds on the Boardwalk. So Abbot Kinney is an expensive street but you still got Abbots Habit the coffeehouse and pizza parlor where the locals can hang out. So that’s cool.”

What does Venice represent to you?
“The biggest thing is community. You’ve got a millionaire movie director next to a homeless junkie and you can’t tell the difference. You go to Marina del Rey or Santa Monica and you can tell, there is a consumer, there is a homeless. So I like the inclusivity of it and I like the fact that we get one million people walk through our neighborhood every month. So you get cultures form all over the world checking out your culture, so there’s a lot of interchange. If you study the history of Abbot Kinney he’s a pretty heavy dude.”  The band Venice is from the same family as The Lennon Sisters, added AKFF. “There you go. It’s got a lot of great history and a great attraction to people of all different types. In Venice we don’t repress your craziness. It’s a beautiful thing. People are more tolerant and accepting of people of all types.”

Gerry's PXL THIS annual 'film' festival features movies made with the PXL 2000 kids’ toy camera. It premieres in Santa Monica on the first Monday in December and also shows in Echo Park, San Francisco, Dallas and other cities as well. “It’s 22 years old, it’s really fun. No budget. It’s easy. I’ve met people from all over the world. It’s ridiculous how much mileage I’ve gotten out of what’s been called ‘lo-fi hi-jinks’.”

PXL THIS 22 is screening Thursday May 23, 8pm at EPFC 1200 N Alvarado St. LA 90026 213-484-8846 $5

Supporting the Venice Garden & Home Tour! Suzy Frank, Owner of Abbot Kinney Real Estate

Suzy Frank, Owner of Abbot Kinney Real Estate
Twenty years ago Jan Brilliot, Jay Griffith, and Linda Lucks started The Venice Garden & Home Tour with a handful of volunteers. Today, the volunteer count has increased exponentially, along with the amount of money raised for the Neighborhood Youth Association (NYA). One volunteer that has been there from the very beginning is Suzy Frank.

Suzy Frank has lived in the neighborhood of Venice for 25 years.  She would say she’s, “lived here when no one wanted to live here on the walk streets.” But the truth is she saw the garden within the weeds and over the last 25 years has helped remove the weeds from the eyes of the general public. She was there when the first red plum trees were planted on Crescent Place and Shell. She happily donated trees to The Westminster Elementary School from her company Abbot Kinney Real Estate. Even now, where there once was budding seeds on the thoroughfares, there now stands full grown plants and trees. Thanks to The Venice Garden & Home Tour and amazing volunteers like Suzy Frank, Venice is now a lifestyle.

(Editor's Note: The Venice Garden & Home Tour is Saturday, May 5, see our previous posts on it.)

Venice Garden & Home Tour this Saturday, May 4, 2013!

I can't wait for the Venice Garden & Home Tour this Saturday, May 4, 2013 with Abbot Kinney Blvd. as the hub of the tour! I went on the tour last year and loved the architectural aspect, which showcased amazing homes east of Lincoln on and around Appleton Way. To be honest, I had not really explored that part of Venice, although I had been here 12 years at the time! Well, the tour enlightened me to the amazing mid-century modern homes displaying unique works of art. Yes, and the beauty and diversity of the gardens! Make sure to check  it out and benefit a neighborhood organization that benefits local kids right here in Venice. So let's get right to the details... followed by the press release.

Press Release –  Venice Home & Garden Tour:

Urban Living: Life Centered Around Abbot Kinney

The 2013 Venice Garden and Home Tour will celebrate 20 years of inspiring and successful tours by showcasing 30 eclectic, creative gardens and homes within blocks of Abbot Kinney Boulevard, "the coolest street in Los Angeles." Tour-goers will visit properties of creative homeowners, artists’ studios, the homes and offices of architects and designers, and view gardens that vary from lush to minimalist pocket-gardens.

Architects and landscape designers live and work in Venice because the community embraces experimentation and the use of non-traditional materials. There will be homes of sleek, white cubes on the tour including two homes in one structure connected by a rooftop deck and a two-story, sculpturally beautiful, staircase. Also on view will be a redesigned home where pop-out windows expand the original footprint and bring the outdoors inside. A LEED Platinum environmentally responsive home with its water conservation and drought tolerant garden will be open as well as homes that are small in size but feel spacious because of creative design solutions. Besides contemporary architecture, restored Craftsman and updated old bungalows are on the tour and are examples of the enviable Venice indoor/outdoor living where the weather is congenial and neighbors take pride in their gardens and homes often enhanced by art of all descriptions. Loft living along the boulevard will be available for viewing where homeowners can go down a flight of stairs to street level cafés.

Some of the innovative architects represented this year include Marc Bricault, Don Dimster, Isabelle Duvivier, John Frane, David Hertz, Michael Sant, Steven Shortridge, Sue Addison, Dennis Gibbens and Carlos Zubieta. Landscape designers include Russ Cletta, Jay Griffith, Andre Jackson, Di Zock, Eva Sobesky, Tatiana Barhar and Mark Tessier. Venice has always attracted artists, and the studios of David Gale, Mollie Favre, Brad Miller and Robin Murez will be open. There is much to see on this exceptional tour as visitors meander near Abbot Kinney in the heart of Venice.
